IT is 10 years since Najaf Mazari fled a tortured Afghanistan, leaving behind his wife and baby daughter in search of a peaceful life for them all.

The journey – via a fishing boat to Australia and a stint at the Woomera Detention Centre – ended in Prahran, where he opened Afghan Traditional Rugs in 2002. He called the High Street store home for three years, repairing carpets until late in the night, showering at a swimming pool and cycling to Hawthorn’s Swinburne University twice a week to study English.
