“I strongly believe that increasing the capacity of female scientists to engage at the environmental leadership table could alter our planet’s future. I also want girls to grow up in a world knowing they can work with reptiles, get their clothes dirty, drive ATVs, be passionate and assertive AND be just as likely to direct federal environmental policy as men.”  ~Georgia Ward-Fear

About this series
Each book is written by an award-winning children’s author and follows the real-life stories of some of Australia’s top scientists and inventors, chosen on the basis of their pioneering work. Themes explored include childhood, school, family, and formative experiences, what inspired them to pursue their chosen path, how they persevered in the face of challenges, and what they have contributed to science in Australia.

About Georgia Ward-Fear: Reptile biologist and explorer

Georgia is a conservation ecologist, reptile biologist and explorer who has trekked many continents and travelled thousands of kilometres in a sea kayak, all in the name of science, adventure and research! As a child she would watch David Attenborough investigate the mysteries of nature and was inspired to follow in his footsteps.

Her key contribution to science is her implementation of the ‘Taste Aversion’ technique to reduce deaths of native animals who were consuming cane toads. Georgia’s work stems from a fascination with nature and a sense of guardianship over wild animals and wild places. She explores shifting ecological patterns, conservation strategies and animal behaviour, and works with the indigenous ranger network across northern Australia.

She is an advocate for equity and diversity in Science and is a ‘Superstar of STEM’, a program run by Science and Technology Australia that aims to smash gender stereotypes of ‘Scientists’ and encourage more girls to work and stay in the STEM fields. She is also part of the Homeward Bound initiative (2019), a global network of Women in STEM who aim to influence global environmental policy.
